Since 1987, the festival has paid tribute to many personalities from the world of English and Irish cinema : actors, actresses and directors. It is an occasion to remember those who have contributed to the dynamism of cinema from across the Channel in the past and continue to do so today.

John is the eldest of 5 children, he was educated at St. Colman's College, Newry, and Central School of Speech and Drama, London. John has a sister, Susan Lynch, who is an established actress in London. Along with appearing in Roan Inish she was also in Interview with the Vampire and an episode of the British crime series "Cracker".
